Speakers press for answers on zoning and action on federal overreach while City Council gets updates on the ANCHOR program and the city manager's work plan
I was one of the speakers at the City Council meeting on Monday. Thank you for drawing attention to our remarks. The news cycle can be unmanageable. As a result, people know little about how national issues are impacting us here at home.
There are topics that deserve in depth coverage. Immigration is certainly one of them. Kate Nuechterlein from NBC29 got the ball rolling in her segment last night.
While there may be differing opinions about how to manage immigration, several facts are inescapable. First, immigrants and their families are members of our community. We can never lose sight of their humanity. Second, their contributions can't be overlooked. Adults are working hard to support themselves and their families and have been for years. They live here, shop here, and pay taxes here. Immigrants are part of a dynamic economy. There are experts who can speak to the local statistics so your audience can be well informed.
I applaud Chief Kochis for taking a stand against FLOCK, data collection and surveillance. Council member Lloyd Snook has also given this topic serious thought and may be worth contacting.
Department of Justice actions are of immediate concern here in Charlottesville. Jim Ryan's resignation as president of UVa is certainly a case in point. We can't overlook the other policies laid out in the June 11 memo that threaten action against entities that run afoul of DEI edicts as well as the intention to target sanctuary jurisdictions.
The local impact of cuts to Medicaid and SNAP also loom large.
I hope that you'll continue to cover these topics and dive deeper when you can.
